Mechanical Characteristics of Conductors

Architect Training Course

This 4-hour interactive online course describes the mechanical characteristics of electrical conductors and how these characteristics affect the design and operation of a power line. The relevant sections of the National Electric Safety Code are reviewed and the mechanical characteristics of conductors are discussed. The mechanical characteristics include conductor designations, types of conductors, conductor design, and the impacts of excessive heat and loads on conductors.

Design issues such as sag and tension calculations are discussed as well as how to calculate conductor sag in various situations and the impacts of different temperatures and tensions on conductor sag. Methods to calculate the maximum allowable span are presented for both vertical and horizontal conditions.

Operational issues such as Aeolian vibration, ice-galloping, and conductor blowout are discussed including mitigation methods. The various methods used to check sag and tension are also discussed. You must have Flash Player Version 7 or higher to view some parts of this course. We also recommend you view this course in Internet Explorer.

This course includes a multiple-choice test at the end of each section.

The objectives of the course are to familiarize you with the mechanical characteristics of conductors and how these characteristics impact the design of a power line. After taking this course you will:

  • Understand the common design characteristics of electrical conductors
  • Know how to calculate sag and tension in conductors
  • Know how to mitigate Aeolian vibration and ice galloping
  • Know how to calculate conductor blowout in conductors
  • Know how to check sag in a conductor using a variety of methods

To comply with AIA and state requirements, all new online courses must be evaluated to confirm the assigned credit hour value. The assigned credit hour value for this course is as stated above, pending confirmation within 90 days. Please be assured RedVector.com has NEVER had a course NOT meet its assigned credit hour value after evaluation, but has agreed to abide by the AIA and state requirements regardless.
