Geotechnology: GIS

Architect Training Course
Over the last decades, spatial data have become more and more important. The reason for this is in part due to the rising popularity of the new technology called Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Since the early 1960s, first researchers and then developers and users converted spatial information into digital form and developed programs that store, manipulate, and display the information. This 5-hour interactive online course focuses on GIS, the backbone of integration, and discusses some issues relating to GIS applications while providing clear examples of the science of GIS.

This course includes a test at the end of each section. You must have Flash Player Version 7 or higher to view some parts of this course. We also recommend you view this course in Internet Explorer.

At the conclusion of this course, you will:

  • Be able to name four types of ecological models and how GIS might be used in their application
  • Know the advantages and disadvantages of using TIN and rasters for modeling
  • Be able to discuss unstructured data and how information may be obtained for them
  • Know when interpolation becomes a problem
  • Understand the elements that are a part of metadata structures
  • Know five uses for a digital terrain model
  • Know the advantages of using kriging over other forms of interpolation
  • Understand the term generalization
